Silence Is Golden

Carmel Keane, RE teacher at Cardinal Newman School and Youth Leader of Christ The King Parish is doing something amazing this November.

Staying silent for 540 minutes. Alongside Hundreds of other people from all over the Birmingham Diocese including Archbishop Bernard Longley, Carmel intends to stay silent to raise money to fund projects supporting young people as part of an innovative new charity, Million Minutes.

Million Minutes is encouraging young people and all who care about them to stay silent in solidarity with young people who are silenced by society and as a way to get sponsored to raise money for local projects that help young people both in the UK and overseas.

‘I am doing this because I firmly believe in the cause, young people who are treated unfairly or are disadvantaged in anyway can often fall off the right path and this money will go directly towards projects that will work with and for them, it will be one of the biggest challenges I have ever undertaken!’ she said.

But Silence isn’t just about not talking Carmel will be giving up on Facebook, email, phoning and texting too. Something that’s pretty hard in today’s connected world. The Initiative has the support of Delia Smith, Britain’s Best selling cookery writer, Fr Christopher Jamison OSB, Presenter of BBC TV Programme The Big Silence, and Margaret Mizen, Mother of murdered teenager Jimmy Mizen, all Champions Of Million Minutes.

Ahead Of the charity’s launch in January This year, Delia Smith Sent a message to young people:
“I am supporting Million Minutes because it's important to stand alongside young people. You have so much to offer the world at present.”

Anyone can donate to the cause by going online to www.bmycharity.com/carmelkeane or by dropping money into the church in an envelope labelled MILLION MINUTES.
